This helmet shows a large part missing from the left front plus multiple cracks that nearly separated the helmet. However, we are very happy to say the helmet saved this young girls life and she is doing very well today.
Her, accident occurred on the last day of school after receiving permission to ride on the street. She was returning home and riding down a hill when the accident happened. As, she was descending the hill her front tire caught some lose sand. This caused her to flip over striking the pavement with her head. It was during the fall that one handle bars was embedded into her abdomen going through to her back. She was very lucky no vital organs or arteries were damaged.
In addition to her belly wound she suffered two broken wrist, a large contusion to the forehead, and multiple contusions and abrasions.
Her, abdominal injury required immediate surgery at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, NY and she was later transferred to the Children's Hospital at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. It was there that she spent nearly 2 weeks recovering from her injuries.
The doctors told her family had she not worn her helmet. The outcome could have been much worse if not fatal.
As, EMS providers we encourage every parent to teach your children about the importance of wearing their helmets anytime they are riding a bike!
